Mrs. Joyce McKenzie, of Lenexa, KS, has been supporting the SCL staff since July of 2011. A retired elementary school teacher, Joyce taught in the Kansas City, MO School District for 27 years. She volunteers her time with us every Wednesday in a variety of projects, most notably assisting in our extensive application process. This includes entering complete and incomplete applications to our data base, filing and mailing thousands of pieces of mail to our program participants. During Joyce’s tenure, she has supported SCL in creating healthy, confident smiles for over 5,000 children across the United States and Canada.
“I had tried a couple of previous volunteer jobs and they didn’t really ‘fit’ for me. I actually discovered SCL via the Internet. It sounded like a very worthwhile organization, and I decided to give it shot. It’s turned out to be even more than I had hoped for when I began. Being part of such a productive, successful process gives me great pleasure and a sense of accomplishment. I’d encourage others to become involved in SCL so they too can help to literally ‘change lives’ shares Joyce. “My husband, Dallas and I share many interests with the typical retirees. We both love to travel and have enjoyed many wonderful trips both domestically and internationally. We strive to stay physically fit and work toward this goal by walking and riding our bicycles. And, of course, we spend as much time as possible with our grandkids and the rest of our extended family.”
With over 1,350 donated service hours, Joyce has become, not only our most treasured volunteer but a part of the SCL family. We thank Joyce for her significant effort in supporting the SCL staff in … bracing kids for a better future!
